Buying and selling coins in Georgia: the rules

Sales tax when you buy

Bullion Partly exempt
Georgia exempts gold, silver and platinum bullion under section 48-8-3(66). The exemption list does not specify a minimum purchase amount.
Palladium is not named in this bullion exemption. Do not assume that jewelry, other metals or other fabricated items receive the same treatment.
Collectible coins Exempt
Georgia exempts sales of coins and currency from sales and use tax under section 48-8-3(67). The Department of Revenue's exemption list does not specify a minimum purchase amount.
The state's FY 2026 Tax Expenditure Report also lists this exemption. This concerns tax on a purchase, not income or gains from selling a collection.

When you sell to a dealer

ID
Georgia's precious-metals dealer chapter excludes transactions exclusively involving numismatic coins or other coinage. For purchases covered by that chapter, dealers record the seller's photo-ID number. Shop policies and local requirements may differ.
What the dealer records
For covered purchases, the dealer records the seller, goods, price and signature and retains the record for at least two years. The coin-only exemption is separate from these requirements.

Dealer licensing

Dealers covered by Georgia's precious-metals and gems chapter register each location with municipal police, county police or the sheriff, depending on location. Dealers exclusively selling or exchanging numismatic coins, and coin-only transactions, are excluded from that chapter. Local business-license requirements are separate.

  • Precious-metals and gems dealer registration for covered businesses · Local police department or county sheriff

If something goes wrong

  • Tax guidance was checked against Georgia's revenue department and FY 2026 report. Dealer-law summaries use the published 2025 code; municipal requirements have not been checked for every location.
  • Ask the shop which identification and payment methods it requires before visiting.
