How the gold melt value calculator works
The melt value of a gold coin or piece of scrap is its pure gold content multiplied by the current gold spot price. This tool loads the live gold price automatically, then adds up the gold in everything you enter — from a single Quarter Eagle to a drawer of 14k jewelry — and shows the combined melt value in real time. You can always override the spot price with your own figure.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the melt value of a gold coin?
Multiply the coin's pure gold content (in troy ounces) by the current gold spot price per ounce. A pre-1933 $20 Double Eagle contains 0.9675 troy oz of gold, so at a $4,000 spot price its melt value is about $3,870. This calculator does that for every coin and karat at once using the live gold price.
How much gold is in 14k, 18k, or 22k scrap?
Karat is the fraction of pure gold out of 24 parts: 14k is 58.3% gold, 18k is 75%, 22k is 91.7%, and 24k is pure gold. One gram of 14k therefore holds about 0.0188 troy oz of gold. Enter the weight in grams above to get the melt value at today's price.
What are pre-1933 US gold coins worth for melt?
Circulated common-date $2.50, $5, $10 and $20 US gold coins are 90% gold, and their melt value tracks the gold spot price. Rare dates, mint marks and high grades carry a numismatic premium above melt, so have anything scarce appraised before selling it for metal.
Should I sell gold coins for melt value?
Melt value is the floor — the worth of the gold alone. Bullion trades close to it, but collectible and pre-1933 coins can be worth well above melt. A reputable local coin dealer will quote against the live spot price and tell you if a coin is worth more than its metal.
Selling more than scrap?
Pre-1933 and graded gold coins can be worth well above melt. Find a verified dealer who appraises coins, not just metal.
