Gold Price Per Gram Today (10K, 14K, 18K, 22K & 24K)

The gold price per gram for every karat, worked out from the spot price. Type a weight to see its melt value, and what a buyer paying part of melt would offer.

Estimated gold price. Enter today's spot price for an exact figure.

75%

You set the slider. It is not a prediction. Scrap buyers pay a share of melt, not the full amount, and the share differs by buyer. Online dealer JM Bullion publishes a floor of 80% of melt on gold jewelry (its terms). Local buyers set their own rates. Ask each one for the payout percentage and any deductions, and get two or three quotes.

Decode the stamp on your piece

Type the number or karat stamped on the metal.

Look for it near the clasp, inside a ring band or on a tag on the chain. A jeweler's loupe helps.

Stamped 925? That is sterling silver, not gold. Try the sterling silver calculator.

How the price per gram is worked out

Gold is priced per troy ounce, and one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. Divide the spot price by that number and you have the price of one gram of pure gold. Multiply by the karat fraction and you have the melt value of one gram of that karat. A gram of 14K is 14/24 gold, so it is worth 58.3% of a gram of pure gold. This is melt value: what the metal alone is worth. Nobody pays all of it for scrap.

What the stamp on your gold means

Karat counts parts of gold out of 24. A stamp like 585 counts parts per thousand. Here is how they line up.

KaratStampGold content
9K37537.5%
10K41741.7%
14K585 or 58358.5% or 58.3%
18K75075.0%
22K91691.6%
24K99999.9%

Why 14K has two stamps

14 divided by 24 is 58.33%, and some pieces are stamped 583 for that reason. Most 14K is stamped 585, which means 58.5% gold, or about 14.04 karat. The 585 mark began as a European habit of alloying a little above 14K, and it is now the most common fineness mark on U.S. jewelry. Jewelers treat the two as the same karat. On a 10-gram piece the difference is about $2.14 at the spot price above. The table uses the exact 14/24 figure. The converter lets you pick 585 if that is what your piece says.

The stamp has some slack in it

For gold shipped across state lines or imported, the National Gold and Silver Stamping Act lets the true purity fall short of the mark by up to 0.3 percentage points, or 0.7 when the whole piece is assayed with its solder. Watchcases and flatware keep the 0.3 limit. So a piece stamped 14K can legitimately test a hair under 58.3%. This is one reason a buyer tests the metal instead of trusting the stamp.

Gold filled and plated are not solid gold

A mark like 1/20 14K GF, RGP or GEP means a layer of gold over base metal. Under the FTC's jewelry guides, gold filled only needs karat gold equal to 1/20 of the item's metal weight, and rolled gold plate 1/40. Do not price these pieces per gram as karat gold. Ask a buyer whether they take them at all.

Pennyweights, grams and ounces

Jewelers still weigh and price precious metal in pennyweights, written dwt. Twenty of them make one troy ounce. Your kitchen ounce is a different, lighter unit.

How to weigh gold at home

  1. Use a digital scale that reads in grams with at least one decimal place. A scale that rounds to whole grams can be off by half a gram per weighing.
  2. Take off stones and non-gold parts where you can. A buyer pays for the metal.
  3. Weigh each karat as its own pile. One mixed lot cannot be priced correctly as a single karat.
  4. Place an empty bowl on the scale, zero it, add the pieces and write the weight down in grams.
  5. Enter that weight in the converter above, then ask each buyer for their weight, their karat test result and their payout percentage.

Why offers come in below melt

A buyer has to test the metal, ship or refine it, and make a margin. Each buyer sets its own share, which is why the slider is yours to set. One online dealer, JM Bullion, publishes a minimum of 80% of melt for gold jewelry. A local shop may pay more or less. Compare two or three written quotes, each with the weight, the karat and the percentage.

Questions

How much is 14K gold worth per gram?

Divide the gold spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035 to get the price of a gram of pure gold, then multiply by 14 and divide by 24. If spot is $4,000 an ounce, a gram of 14K holds about $75.02 of gold. That is melt value, and a scrap buyer will pay a share of it. The table on this page does the math live.

What is the difference between 14K, 583 and 585?

All three mean 14-karat gold. Exactly 14/24 is 58.33% gold, which is why some pieces are stamped 583. Most 14K is stamped 585 (58.5% gold), the most common mark on U.S. jewelry. At a $4,000 spot price the gap is about $2.14 on a 10-gram piece.

How many grams are in a pennyweight and a troy ounce?

One pennyweight (dwt) is 1.5552 grams, and 20 pennyweights make one troy ounce. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 9.7% heavier than the 28.35-gram ounce on a kitchen scale. The gold spot price is quoted per troy ounce.

Why would a buyer pay less than the price per gram shown here?

The price per gram is melt value, the worth of the pure gold alone. Buyers pay a share of it to cover testing, refining and their own margin, and the share varies from buyer to buyer. Ask every buyer for the payout percentage and any deductions before you sell.

Is 10K gold real gold?

Yes. 10K is an alloy that is 41.7% gold, with the rest other metals, so it is worth less per gram than 14K or 18K. The stamp is 417.

How do I weigh gold at home?

Use a digital scale that reads in grams to at least one decimal place, take off any stones, and weigh each karat separately. Type the weight into the converter above to see the melt value.
