Buying and selling coins in Michigan: the rules

Sales tax when you buy

Bullion Partly exempt
Gold, silver and platinum bullion is exempt when its value depends on metal content rather than form and its purity is at least 900 parts per 1,000. Palladium bullion is not named in this definition.
Collectible coins Partly exempt
Michigan exempts investment coins: government-issued metal coins with a market value above face value, including qualifying numismatic coins.

When you sell to a dealer

ID
Michigan's Precious Metal and Gem Dealer Act excludes government- or private-mint coins, commemorative medals and tokens, plus bullion bars and discs of the type traded by banks and commodity exchanges. Shop identification policies may still apply.

Sources: Michigan MCL 445.482 (2025 edition via Justia)

Dealer licensing

Businesses buying items covered by the Precious Metal and Gem Dealer Act register with the local government or police agency. The act's coin and bullion exclusions are separate from general business and zoning requirements.

  • Precious-metal and gem dealer registration for covered items · Local government or police agency

If something goes wrong

  • Tax definitions were checked against the legislature's published statute. Dealer-law summaries use the 2025 code via Justia; individual municipal requirements have not been checked.
  • Confirm identification and payment policies with the shop before visiting.
