§ 03

Before you sell here

  1. 1

Know your metal floor before you walk in.

Gold is — and silver — an ounce right now. Our offer checker compares an offer with metal value and dated examples of published buy prices.

  2. 2

    Know South Carolina's seller rules.

Covered precious-metals purchases require a driver's license or another permitted photo ID and a signed transaction record. Certain transactions are exempt, including coin purchases between dealers and collectors at regularly scheduled numismatic conventions.

The 21-day holding period for covered precious metals expressly excludes coins.

  3. 3

Call ahead for anything bigger than a few coins.

Ask whether the person who prices collections is in that day, and whether they pay by cash or check for larger amounts.

  4. 4

    Get a second offer.

Offers on the same coins can differ a lot between shops. Read how to sell a coin collection first if this is your first time.

Questions to ask Mount Pleasant Coin

We couldn't confirm these from public sources, so ask before you go:

  • What would you pay today for a 1 oz American Silver Eagle, and for $1 face value of pre-1965 silver? (Ask two shops the same question to compare.)
  • Is an appraisal free, or free only if I sell to you? Do you put it in writing?
  • How do you pay for larger amounts — cash, check or wire — and is there a cash limit?
  • If a coin is worth grading, can you submit it to PCGS or NGC for me?
