Melt value is the floor

Melt value is what the metal in a coin is worth: its pure silver content times the spot price. A Peace dollar holds 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, so at $60 an ounce its melt value is $46.41. The calculator above uses today's price instead.

That number is the floor. How close a common, worn Peace dollar sells to it depends on collector demand. A scarce date, a rare mint mark or a coin in high grade is priced as a collectible, starting from the floor and going up.

The Peace dollar replaced the Morgan in 1921 to mark the end of World War I. It was struck at Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco until 1928, skipped 1929 to 1933, and ended in 1935. The 1921 coins were struck in high relief; the design was flattened in 1922 so the coins would stack.

• 1928 (no mint mark): The lowest-mintage Peace dollar: 360,649 struck. Scarce in all grades.
• 1921: First year, struck only at Philadelphia, and in high relief. 1,006,473 struck.
• 1927 and 1927-D: 848,000 and 1,268,900 struck. Better dates, especially in higher grades.
• 1924-S and 1925-S: 1,728,000 and 1,610,000 struck. Scarce above Choice Uncirculated and rare in gem grades.
• 1934: 954,057 struck, the last Peace dollar under a million. Premiums start at Mint State.
